Over the past fortnight, a group of Year 5 and 6 children have taken part in a 6 a-side football tournament at Goals. Week 1 began well with a comfortable 6 goal victory over Killinghall Primary. Last week, the Under 11 boys continued on the front foot with a convincing 6-2 victory over a very competitive Thackley Primary School in our first game. Ethan Gill set the tone with a goal inside the first few minutes. Thackley fought back and at the break it was 3-1 to Wellington. The second half saw some amazing goals, including a deflection of the face of our left wing, Reece Stranney, sending the ball sailing over the top of an unlucky Thackley goalkeeper, putting us out to an unassailable 5-1 lead.
Our second game brought us up against a very well drilled Low Ash team. Unfortunately, despite a very valiant fight, we went down 3-1 for our first loss of the year. In our third game, Wellington showed real grit and determination to fight out a 3-1 victory over a very determined Westbourne team. The score didn’t paint the true picture of our control of the game with no more than 6 of our shots hitting the cross bar. The turning point was another superb goal from Ethan Gill right after the resumption of the second half. With a few minutes to go Lewis Shepheard, who only filled in at the last minute, put the game out of reach with a superb solo goal which started from our defensive area and finished the ball crashing into the top corner of the net.
After some very positive results, we look forward to this Thursday where we are sure to face yet more challenging opposition.
