During Autumn 1 Wellington Primary School took part in an Under 9 football tournament at Goals. Eight children from Year 3 and Year 4 were selected to compete in this competition which stretched across three weeks.
In the first two weeks Wellington played some outstanding football, progressing to the finals undefeated. Coming up against stiff opposition in our semi-final against St Anthony’s, the boys had to dig deep to come back from 1-0 down, with 2 goals inside the last two minutes helping us to a 2-1 win and a passage into the final against a very skilful Low Ash team.
This proved to be a gripping game, with the lead constantly changing. When Kayden Hunt scored from a free kick with 30 seconds to go making the score 4-3 in our favour, it looked like the game was over. However, Low Ash scored from the restart to force the game to penalties. Fortunately, our boys held their nerves and were eventual winners 5-4 on penalties. This was a deserved win for a very talented group of children.
Over the three week tournament they demonstrated not only a high degree of skill and character but more importantly a high level of gamesmanship and respect for their opposition. Well done Callum Porter, Kayden Hunt, Sam Marshall, Zac Johnson, Archie Rowntree, Asher Irfan, Joseph Fieldhouse and Harris Khan on a stellar performance!
