4H step back in time to 1939

4H had a fantastic day at Murton Park when they stepped back in time to 1939 and became evacuees for the day. Through role play, they found out what life would be like for a child in the war as they carried out different activities. In the kitchen they helped with the laundry. “It is very different to washing today,” said Maddie, “It is much harder as you have to do it by hand rather than in a machine.” They also made flapjack, using up their entire ration of butter and sugar, and made butter from fresh cream. Another activity was making a rag rug. “It was really hard to make the holes in the sack,” said Ali. As they wrote a postcard home it made them think about how it really felt to be away from their families. Putting out an incendiary bomb was very exciting. Theo said, “Pumping the water was really hard, and so was aiming the hose at the fire.”
