Phonics and Reading at Wellington

In Early Years and Key Stage 1 the children are taught phonics using Phonics Play alongside the Letters and Sounds document.  The main reading scheme used across the Early Years and Key Stage 1 is Oxford Reading Tree however, other schemes, such as Collins Big Cat and Rigby Rocket are used to strengthen the quality of reading provision.

As the children move into Key Stage 2 they will continue to progress through the Oxford Reading Tree scheme, until they become a ‘free reader’.  Becoming a free reader means that the children will have the freedom to select their own book to read, either bringing a book from home or selecting one from our extensive range.

Reading at home with your child

All children have a login to Bug Club, which they can also use at home.  This is a fantastic resource for supporting your child with their reading.  If you do not have your child’s login details, please contact your child’s class teacher, who will be able to provide them.
